Fairfield University Art Museum is pleased to present Peter Anton: Just Desserts, a solo exhibition of Anton’s incredibly realistic, oversized pop sculptures of desserts, on view from May 10 through July 27, 2024.

Anton’s models for his array of desserts come from products that are instantly familiar to the viewer and evoke nostalgia for childhood (and adult) favorites. Sculptures that will be featured in the exhibition include a melting chocolate-covered ice cream pop, a candy apple, a gigantic box of donuts, and an enormous box featuring a deluxe assortment of chocolates, with one empty brown paper candy cup.

The exhibition will explore immigrant labor and innovative businessmen, domestic servants, and wealthy vacationers, growing public need and local benefactors. Dichotomies characterize the Gilded Age in Fairfield. The “Gilded Age” (1865-1912) was a period of immense growth in America known for lavish expressions of wealth and cavernous class distinctions. In 1873, Mark Twain gave the era its name with the novel, The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today. Tremendous social and economic changes could also be found in Fairfield—changes that would not have been possible without the working class supporting the grand lifestyle of the upper classes. This
exhibition presents the industrialists, philanthropists, and entrepreneurs who summered in the Fairfield area, including P.T. Barnum, Annie Burr and Oliver Gould Jennings, Dr. Ira DeVer Warner, and Jonathan and Harriet V.S. Thorne, alongside the people who made their lifestyles possible. Money Talks: The Gilded Age in Fairfield is on view at the Fairfield Museum and History Center through June 16, 2024.

Fairfield University Art Museum is pleased to present Suzanne Chamlin: Studies in Color, a solo exhibition of Chamlin’s recent paintings on view from April 5 through July 27, 2024, in the Museum’s Bellarmine Hall Galleries.
This selection of recent works by the artist explores ideas about color theory and light through a series of landscape painting and interior still lifes. For each of the paintings in the exhibition, Chamlin set a highly specific palette; experimentation within this limited range then guided her decisions about process and pictorial space.

A wonderful selection of programming has been created to complement the exhibition, including a virtual talk on color theory, a gallery talk with the artist, a family day event focused on color, and a drawing party which will focus on still lifes. All of the programs are free and open to the public.

A complementary exhibition of fourteen photographs is on view in the rear Bellarmine Hall Galleries during the run the Chamlin exhibition. Entitled The Landscape in Focus: Recent Acquisitions of Photography this exhibition includes works by Adger Cowans, Catherine Opie, Victoria Sambunaris, James Welling, and Huang Yan among others.

Suzanne Chamlin

Suzanne Chamlin (American, b. 1963) received her BA from Barnard College and MFA from the Yale School of Art. She lives and works in Connecticut. She has been a professor in the Studio Art Program at Fairfield University since 2009. Suzanne’s process centers on experimentation. Observing the landscape and painting the changing light inspires her imagination and her sense of invention. Seeing and observing color in the landscape and translating it in her paintings is fundamental to her process. The challenges of painting with the conditions of changing light and weather are always present in her artistic practice. Her process includes multiple revisions and thought to time in constructing a landscape, and attention to the range of possibilities for creating a picture, a landscape, and pictorial space.

Wilderado is thrilled to share “Sometimes” b/w “Tomorrow” via Bright Antenna Records – listen click here to preorder vinyl and to listen – and available on limited edition 7” vinyl. The new songs were written by the band during sessions for their forthcoming sophomore album, recorded in Norman, Oklahoma, and produced by Chad Copelin (Sufjan Stevens, SYML) and James McAlister(Gracie Abrams, The National). The two-track single is Wilderado’s first new music of 2024 and follows last fall’s “In Between” single, whose latest version featured guest vocals from Matt Berninger of The National. News of “Sometimes” b/w “Tomorrow” comes along with news of the band’s June US headline tour.

As the first new single “Sometimes” kicks in with the sound of Max’s gentle vocals over an acoustic guitar you are reminded of where Wilderado has come from. The single harkens back to some of the band’s earliest recordings and when asked about the song Max shared, “This is a look into coping mechanisms. It’s something I’ve struggled with this year. I convince myself I need help calming down or being social at the right times. The first part of the song is indulgence, the second part is the reality of the situation and the ending is the honest bit.”

Wilderado - Sometimes / Tomorrow - Single
Wilderado latest single Sometimes / Tomorrow – Single. Click here to pre order the 7″ inch vinyl

“Tomorrow” brings you into the present and reflects the growth of the group since originally forming in 2015, with more complex song structures and melodies. “Tomorrow came from a lost guitar part that we finally stitched into a song,” revealed Max, adding, “For some reason the body of music felt like a safe place to try and dive into my troubled faith. The further I went the heavier it got. Similar to the energy that builds in a frustrating conversation, I feel like the song helped me ride a motivation and spill my guts a bit.”

Since first forming, Wilderado has been steadily building a passionate fan base. They have accrued 200+ MILLION streams and 3+ MILLION monthly listeners across platforms and their live following has continued to grow each year. The as yet-to-be-titled sophomore LP will follow the band’s self-titled debut full-length. Released October 2021 via Bright Antenna Records, the album led to their Late Night TV Debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and AM TV Debut on CBS Saturday Morning. Last spring Wilderado toured with My Morning Jacket and released Wilderado Live – their first ever live LP featuring career spanning songs including “Surefire” and “Head Right” (their two Top 10 Alternative Radio hits from Wilderado) along with several older songs including “Wheat” and “Morning Light” as well as fan favorite “Rubble to Rubble.”

Wilderado is excited to be sharing new music along with the spring tour news and for the most up-to-date information visit their website. All June dates will be supported by Flyte.

The Fairfield Library is at 1080 Old Post Road in Fairfield. Corinne Lapin-Cohen lives and works in Katonah, New York, where she teaches drawing and painting at Stone House Studio. She graduated Russell Sage College with a degree in art history, and did her graduate work in environmental preservation. Corinne was the founder of the botanical art program at The Lasdon Arboretum, taught botanical watercolor and drawing at The New York Botanical Gardens, Northern Westchester Center for the Arts, was an adjunct professor at Lehman College and at the Katonah Museum of Art. She was part of the panel discussion “Artists Talking on Art” with the Smithsonian Institution, and appears as a guest lecturer for various groups speaking on botanical or abstract art. Her artwork is exhibited in museums, universities, art galleries, corporate headquarters, botanical gardens, arboretums, hospitals and environmental centers throughout the country. She is included in the permanent collection of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation at Carnegie Mellon University, Ameriprise, and Merrill Lynch. Her work is acquired by collectors and has been published in books and periodicals. Corinne states, “I have painted traditional botanical watercolors for 25 years. My intention is to merge art and science – scientific awareness with the hand and eye of the artist.i. The  importance of plants in our life is critical to our survival. My focus extends to the broader environmental impact upon bees, water, soil, and air quality. Currently I am creating large abstract oil and mixed media works on canvas. Although my work has evolved into a more abstract genre, humanity and the environment remain my focus. There is a balance between pure abstraction and identifiable subject matter. The ambiguity of meaning allows the paintings to have multiple layers of interpretation.”

Susan Fehlinger, Steve’s Shack

Susan Fehlinger is a self-taught oil painter. She has exhibited widely in the area and she teaches at the Rowayton Art Center.

She says, “I had yearned to paint throughout my 35 year career as a television producer in New York city. So in 2003 I quit my job, bought a Bed and Breakfast and moved to Cape Cod. I wanted to explore my right brain after years of favoring the left.  I discovered the palette knife that year and found that I could apply paint on a canvas quickly, thickly, and spontaneously. I loved the textures I could produce with the knife and I loved no brushes to wash. I began painting the coastal landscapes and cottages around me. I pushed the contrast of the Cape light, played with composition, scale, placement and negative/positive spaces. Hopper is my hero.

I want to create a strong sense of place, a familiar but somewhat abstracted place— that  calm place that we long for in these unsettling times—and then to capture it when the light is just right.

Anda Styler graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1983 with a BA in fine arts. She had her first show that same year and from there went on to many shows and gallery representation, group and solo with great success. She has also been published in several North Light books, Art in America Magazine,The Artists magazine, winning competitions in acrylic painting, and the NY Times, where twice her work was featured for upcoming exhibitions.Over the years, she has had representation in fine art galleries in many different states. In Santa Fe NM, she fell in love with the landscape there and leaned to paint it with passion. Anda says, “My passion is painting and I love creating composition, color harmony, color balance, contrast – light and shadow  –  all around me in the ever changing landscape. There is a lot of understanding that goes into my painting -observing the sky and the wind patterns – how the time of day & time of year effect the landscape – light and shadow – and the buildings that capture the contrast. I invite the viewer into the painting – invited to be in the creation for just a moment….”
