Alfano, Byrd, DiNota, Grant and Peprah named team captains.
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – With its sights set on a third-straight Northeast Conference Championship, the Sacred Heart University football team concluded its spring season on Saturday. Head coach Mark Nofri handed out several team awards and named the captains for the 2022 fall campaign.
It’s been three years since the Pioneers had a full spring season. This time last year SHU was prepping for the NEC title game during the abbreviated spring schedule. The pandemic wiped out spring practice in 2020.
Earning captain honors for the fall are cornerback Frank Alfano, linebacker DeAndre Byrd, wide receiver Rob DiNota, running back Malik Grant and defensive lineman Kevin Peprah. Only Byrd served as a captain last season.
Junior linebacker Tyreke Brown collected the Special Teams Player of the Year honor while offensive lineman Alex Trapasso earned the Unsung Hero Award.
The Scout Team Player of the Year went to rookies Javin Adderly (defense) and Dylan Jones (offensive). From spring practice, first-years Brody Colbert (defense) and Tim Suk (offensive) were earned the Cole McCully Most Improved Award.
The run towards a third-straight conference crown starts September 3 when the Pioneers travel to Lafayette. The home opener is September 24 against Dartmouth.
Head Coach Mark Nofri:
On spring practice:
“I thought it went well. We got a chance to see a lot of young guys develop and make some tweaks or changes to our overall offense and defense.”
On the younger players gaining more experience
“Some of our guys have never been through a true offseason before. It was good to have them see and go through what we do in a full traditional year. Our lifting and conditioning program is huge for the development of our young guys.”
On the new team captains:
“I think our team did a great job of voting for their peers and seeing who they feel will do a great job of leading the Pioneers in fall of 2022. To me it isn’t always the best player, but the player that does everything right on and off the field. Someone who does what is best for the TEAM and make sacrifices that help the team. A player who works on and off the field and represents SHU football in a positive way.”
